Why Do Men Turn Into Navy SEALs at the Airport?

Why Do Men Turn Into Navy SEALs at the Airport?

Can somebody please explain to me why men and women seem to become completely different species the moment they pull into an airport?

Ladies...

Is it just me?

Or does your man suddenly transform into some sort of elite military commander whose mission is to get through the airport before the airport even opens?

Don't get me wrong—I understand airports can be hectic. They're busy, confusing, loud, and every second person looks like they're already late for something.

But...

Our brains process this very differently.

My brain says...

"Okay... let's get organized."

I take a deep breath.

I unload the suitcases.

I make sure I have our passports.

Phone?

Wallet?

Travel documents?

Grandchild?

Perfect.

One bite at a time.

His brain?

"MOVE! MOVE! MOVE! WE'RE LOSING PRECIOUS SECONDS!"

The car isn't even parked before he's sprinting toward the elevator, repeatedly jabbing the button like it personally insulted his family.

Meanwhile I'm still trying to wrestle two carry-on suitcases, two backpacks, and a seven-year-old who has somehow already spotted every cool thing a parking parkade has to offer him.  Then came Houston Airport.

Lord help me.

If you've been there lately, you'll understand.

Construction everywhere.

Signs pointing in seventeen different directions.

Half the hallways looked temporary.

He takes off ahead trying to find the United check-in desk.

I look up...

He's gone.

Gone.

Vanished.

Like he was drafted into the FBI Witness Protection Program.

Now, to be fair, I wasn't exactly standing still.

I was hauling luggage, trying not to lose Declan, making sure nobody ran us over with an oversized suitcase, and generally trying to survive.

Eventually I find him.

Standing there.

Looking at me with that expression.

You know the one.
We as woman see it often.

"What took you so long?"

Excuse me, sir...

I was dragging a child, two carry-ons, two backpacks, and what felt like the emotional weight of an entire family vacation.

I wasn't exactly competing in the Olympic speed walking event.

Then we reached the self-serve kiosk.

Now here's where our brains really separated.

Declan had a boxed set of golf clubs.

I simply wondered if they counted as oversized baggage.

Apparently asking a question was wasting valuable airport time because before I knew it, my loving partner had taken over the screen and was pressing buttons like he was trying to launch a rocket to NASA.

Meanwhile I'm standing there wondering...

Why are we acting like our plane leaves in six minutes?

We had FOUR HOURS before takeoff.

Four.

Hours.

Nobody was boarding.

Nobody was calling our names over the loudspeaker.

We weren't the stars of a reality show called Escape the Airport.

Can we just...

Breathe?

Then came the hardest part.

Security.

This is where we always separate.

He stays.

I leave.

He doesn't really understand what that moment feels like for me.

I don't usually say much because emotions aren't exactly his favourite language.

But every single time I walk away, my heart sinks.

I don't know when I'll see him again.

Weeks?

Months?

Life doesn't always give us guarantees.

So I swallow my tears.

Smile.

Grab what's left of our luggage.

And continue on with a seven-year-old who has officially decided that carrying his backpack is the greatest injustice ever inflicted upon a child.

"My legs hurt."

"It's soooo far."

"Grandma... that food smells amazing."

Of course it does.

Because airports have scientifically discovered that cinnamon buns smell 400% stronger when you're trying to catch a flight.

Then TSA happened.

Oh...

TSA.

I tell Declan,

"Buddy, put your backpack on the belt."

What he heard was...

"Try to make the TSA agent laugh."

Instead of putting his things down, he starts making faces at her.

Thankfully she laughed.

I survived.

Barely.

Now here's a travel tip I didn't know.

If you're travelling with a container full of spices in your carry-on...

Just...

Don't.

Apparently a bag full of mysterious powder gets people's attention.

Within seconds everything was being swabbed.

The container.

The bags.

Me.

Declan.

I was half expecting them to swab my eyebrows.

Turns out they were simply making sure Grandma wasn't secretly transporting something a little more exciting than Cajun seasoning.

We passed with flying colours.

Honestly, I couldn't stop laughing.

Meanwhile Declan was dancing, entertaining everyone, completely oblivious to the stress that adults manufacture for ourselves.

Kids have an incredible ability to remind us that life doesn't always need to be so serious.

As the plane lifted off toward Canada, my emotions finally caught up with me.

I was sad.

I missed him already.

I hated saying goodbye.

But I also looked over at Declan smiling beside me and I smiled, my heart lightened.

He made the entire adventure worthwhile.

So now I have to ask...

Do men genuinely have some built-in instinct that tells them every airport is a timed obstacle course?

Is there a tiny voice in their heads screaming,

"Go! Faster! Beat everyone!"

While our brains are quietly saying,

"Let's get organized. Nobody panic. We'll get there when we get there."

Science actually suggests there may be something to it.

On average, men are more likely to become task-focused under pressure. Their brains often switch into "solve the problem as quickly as possible" mode.

Women, on average, tend to scan the bigger picture—keeping track of people, belongings, timing, emotions, and all the tiny details happening at once.

Neither approach is wrong.

One gets you moving.

The other makes sure nobody gets left behind.

Maybe that's why we drive each other absolutely crazy.

And maybe...

Just maybe...

If the airport Navy SEAL slowed down for thirty seconds...

And the airport project manager worried just a tiny bit less...

Travelling together might actually become part of the vacation instead of surviving the first event.

Or maybe I'm just extra special.

Either way...

Next trip, I'm checking the spices.

Question of the Week:

Who are you at the airport?

🏃 Team "Let's Go! The Plane Is Leaving!"

🧳 Team "Relax... We Have Four Hours."

Or are you the rare unicorn who somehow manages to be both?
